Increase Officer Safety with eCitations by L-Tron

Many benefits come from using an electronic ticketing (eCitation) system. Increase safety by spending less time on issuing tickets and more time in the field where officers need to be. Information is easy to read and transmit, making it more valuable in court. Using eCitations instead of handwriting tickets makes the entire process faster and easier.

Increase Officer Safety

This is one of the greatest advantages to using an electronic ticketing system. When officers stop a vehicle, they stand on the side of the vehicle and put their lives at risk by being near moving traffic. According to L-Tron (eCitation manufacturer), 60% of officer deaths from 2000-2009 were a direct result of traffic-related incidents. This type of system allows an officer to return to their vehicle and use the in-car scanner so they are not standing in a danger zone where they’re more vulnerable to being hurt by motorists.

L-Tron interviewed an officer who stated that the eCitation screen was much easier to see in bright light. He said he could hold a driver’s license at steering wheel level to scan while keeping his eyes on the person stopped in front of his car. Because older types of driver’s license scanners were almost unusable in bright light, he sometimes had to hold them in a shadow underneath the dash to see the screen and scan the license, diverting his attention from the person he had stopped.

Save Time

When an officer handwrites citations, he may have several violations to note. According to L-Tron, this can take up to 20 minutes or longer, but their system takes an average of stopping time, running the data, and entering the ticket of only approximately 5 minutes each. This timesaving product helps to have more officers actively on the street per day, where they are needed to protect the public.

Legible Tickets

Many tickets are dismissed in the court system due to being illegible. L-Tron reports up to 15% are dismissed for this reason, resulting in substantial lost revenue and potentially degrading public safety. Those who get their otherwise legitimate tickets dismissed in court might be emboldened to continue flouting the law, believing they can escape consequences again in the future.

Fast, Easy, and Efficient System

The process of using L-Tron’s eCitation system is easy and fast. First, the barcode on the driver’s license is scanned and it is auto populated on a citation form. The citation can be printed immediately with an in-vehicle printer, and the citation can be sent digitally to the courthouse immediately. This saves time in the justice system. L-Tron reports that it can sometimes take up to 6 months for the handwritten citations to be distributed to the courts.

How to Get Started

You only need a few items that you may already have in your upfits to get started with this innovative system. You will need the 4910LR driver’s license scanner along with an in-vehicle printer such as the Brother PocketJet 7, some thermal paper, and a mounting system for your upfit vehicles.
